The Titan's Curse

I made the horrible mistake of going to bed at 9, only to wake up three hours later...quite awake. So I decided to finish reading the rest of the third book of the Percy Jackson series. There isn't that much to say about this book, but it did stir up some funny feelings when it described San Francisco as the most beautiful city Percy had ever seen. However, that burrito fight at the Hoover Dam did not make me happy at all. It reminded me of Russell Peters' description of Indians imagining throwing mashed potatoes everywhere at a wedding. Both ideas made me hungry for burritos and mashed potatoes. But the one thing that I did not expect to come out of this book was a profound quote spoken by the goddess of wisdom, Athena:

"The most dangerous flaws are those which are good in moderation."

Anyway, Chong Bong said that she finished Book 4 in one sitting. We'll see.

More From the Prince of Preachers

Marital Status:

Last week, another blind date came and went just like all the other ones.

Yesterday, I found out that my favorite cousin is getting married on June 18th. My dad asked me what I thought about that. What kinda question is that?!

Today, Haokip emailed me and wrote, "I hope you will get a good wife soon."

During 아줌마 class,

아줌마: Didn't you go see the flowers with your girlfriend?
Me: I don't have a girlfriend (for the nth time).
아줌마: Really? Why not (for the nth time)?

Through Fire and Water

“I would go into the depths a hundred times to cheer a downcast spirit. It is good for me to have been afflicted, so that I might know how to speak a word in season to one who is weary…realize, then, that to acquire soulwinning power, you will have to go through fire and water, through doubt and despair, through mental torment and soul distress. It will not be the same with all of you, or perhaps with any two of you, but according to the work allotted you will be your preparation. You must go into the fire if you are to pull others out of it, and you will have to dive in to the floods if you are to draw others out of the water. You cannot work a fire escape without feeling the scorch of the blaze, or man a lifeboat without being covered with the waves.”

This week's persecuted church: Pakistan

Hundreds of Muslims attacked the Christian village of Khokarki this morning a few miles from the city of Gujranwala (Punjab), forcing its inhabitants to flee. According to AsiaNews sources, anonymous for security reasons, the attack took place following a dispute between Christian Mushtag gill and some local Muslims, who had accused the man and his son of blasphemy. Mushtaq, 60, and his son, are accused of having desecrated the Koran. The police arrested them yesterday, after complaints of some Muslims who claim to have found torn pages of the Qu’ran in a bag hidden near the home of two Christians. The news sparked panic among the Christian community, while the family of the two accused were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge with friends.

Bicycle Thief

Dear Bicycle Thief,

I don't know you and you don't know me, but you jacked my bike today. I was in the middle of my last class and thought that it would be safe to keep my bike unlocked with the other bikes in the bike rack. I usually lock it up, but I've always seen the 한신 Apartments as a safe and HONEST place where I've often left my bike unlocked many times before. I suppose I can understand if my bike had been some nice mountain bike with crazy shocks or something. But it wasn't; it was a 45,000won used kid's bike that I've come to love over the past seven months. Why would you take my piece of crap bike that you're probably not even going to use?

Anyway, I hope you take good care of her. She doesn't like it when you change the gears, so just leave it at where it is. Be sure to check her tires once a month and stop by the 참좋은자전거 bike shop, which is where she was bought. The 아저씨 there is really nice and will take good care of you. She's been through a lot, so be kind to her. Cause if you don't, remember that I still have my bike lock key, and I know that my lock is still wrapped around like a pretzel on the handlebar. If I ever find my bike around one of the apartments of Mokdong, I'll be waiting for you to come out and ride it. And I'll jack you up...as long as you're a male student.

I'm going to buy a new bike tomorrow with my emergency money. Please don't steal this one.

Regretfully,

Phil

Hungry

Whenever I eat McDonald's, I always get hungry again real soon and have to eat more when I get home. It probably has something to do with processed ingredients and preservatives that break down at abnormal rates. In that sense, I really feel like it's "fast food" that doesn't serve the purpose of real food.

For the first time, some of us church people actually talked about theology outside of a church setting today. It was so encouraging to see people desiring to know and understand God's Word in newer and deeper ways. We were actually wrestling with tough questions and seeking to clarify the even tougher answers. I feel like we'd been a starving church that had been eating McDonald's all these years but finally got a taste of some real food recently. Now that we've tasted and felt some of its fullness, we want more. You can sense the hunger for knowledge and truth. Ironically, all of this took place at a McDonald's. =/

With all of that said, I recently discovered even more Ravi Zacharias mp3s on a different site. And for the cherry on top, I even found some more Tim Keller sermons to add to my collection. I don't see myself getting full any time soon.

This week's persecuted church: Iraq

When Suhail Louis left the sectarian violence of Baghdad a year ago, he thought he would find comfort in the safety of Northern Iraq. Instead, he's faced with a new discomfort: unemployment. Today he lives in this predominantly Christian town just outside of Irbil. The town has seen the arrival of more than 5,000 Christian families since the beginning of the war. His new home offers safety, but little more. Should he learn Kurdish, the local language, to improve his employment prospects here? Or should he study English in case he is able to migrate to North America? The 43-year-old Arabic-speaking engineer cannot stop reminiscing about his home city — the hustle and bustle, the culture, his once-good life. Even if the past eight years have been fraught with danger, it was still home.“In Baghdad there was a future. Here, the future is unknown.”The Baghdad engineer is far from alone in his state of flux. Many other Iraqi Christians who fled to the North find themselves in a similar predicament.

Bed Spring

I've been sleeping on the floor ever since we moved, so I've been on the lookout for beds ever since. Many of you know by now that my family lives like scavengers as 70% of our furniture was from outside in the alleys. Last night, I was on my way to basketball and
found a new bed!
My parents and I spent hours cleaning and moving things around our house.
The bed even came with a little counter that is perfect for my bedside. Who needs IKEA when neighbors can furnish your room for you?

This month, I'm starting two new jobs, getting my basketball shoes repaired, going on a Jae trip, and possibly having my annual blind date. All of these can either turn out very well or be a recipe for disaster. But no matter what happens, I'll always be able to come home to a bed.

This week's persecuted church: Saudi Arabia

Two Indian Christians working in Saudi Arabia were arrested and sentenced to 45 days in prison for proselytizing. It is believed that they were arrested to keep them from practicing Christianity privately in their home. While in prison awaiting their trial, their apartment was ransacked. An employer has returned the passport of one of the Christians, making it clear that his job is no longer available, and he will expelled.

Tanks Tiff!

So it seemed that it was cool for everyone to be in a relationship but me.
So I took matters into my own hands and ended up with him: him who displayed the characteristics of a cheater a liar an abuser and a thief. So why was I surprised when he broke into my heart? I called 911 but I was cardiac arrested for aiding and abetting ‘cos it was me who let him in claiming we were just friends. I was already decided for me by the first date that even if he wasn’t, I was gonna make him the one. You know I was tired of being alone and I simply made up in my mind that it was about that time so I decided to drag him along for the ride ‘cos I was always the bridesmaid and never the bride. A virgin in the physical but mentally just a grown woman on the corner in heat and was tired of the wait. So I was gonna make him the one. He had a form of godliness but not much bbut hey hey I can change him, so I’ll take him; I mean he's close enough. Ready to sell my aorta for a quarter not knowing the value of its use to me. Arteries so clogged with my will it blocked his will from flowing through me. So I thank Christ that his blood pressure gave this heart an attack that flat-lined my obscure vision put me flat on my back. Through my ignorance he saw so through my sternum he sawed and cracked opened my chest and transplant so I was fit to molt in a new heart and a renewed rite spirit within. So now I fully understand better yet I thoroughly comprehend how much I need to wait for You. See the bad thing is that I knew he wasn’t You from the beginning ‘cos in the beginning was the word and he didn’t even sound or shine like your son. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks and all he could whisper was sweet empty nothings which meant nothing. He couldn’t even pray when I needed him to. Asking him to fast would be absurd so forget about being cleansed and washed with water through the word. But I know You. You’re already praying for me, even never having met me, let me assure You I will wait for You. I will no longer date, socialize or communicate with carbon copies of You to appease my boredom or to quench my thirsty desire for attention and short lived compliments from ‘sorta kindas’. You know, he sorta kinda right but sorta kinda wrong. His first name luke his last name warm. I won’t settle for false companionship, I won’t lay in the embrace of his arms attempting to find some closeness but never feeling so far far apart, ‘cause I just want to be held. ‘Cos all I gotta do is say —no. No more almost sessions of almost coming close passing winks and buying drinks and I’ma I’ma I’ma flirt who flirts with the ideology of ‘can you just tell me how much I can get away with and still be saved’? No more. I’ll stay in my bed alone and write poems about how I will wait for You. He won’t even come close, our fingers won’t even interlock, we won’t even exchange breath. ‘Cos I have thoughts that I’ve saved as in a file that God has only equipped you to open. I will no longer get rated down from so called friends and family talks about the concern for my biological clock when I serve the author of time —who is not subject to time but I am subject to Him. He has the ability to stop, fast, forward, pause or rewind at any given time. So if we could role play you would be Abraham and I would be Sarah or you could be Isaac and I could be Rebecca a servant’s answered prayer. I am bone of your bone flesh of your flesh, made up of your rib —Adam. And once we meet like electrons that will be bound to your nucleus completely indivisible —atom. We even speak the same math: one plus one plus one equals three which really equals one if you add ‘em. We were all created in His image but you have the ability to reflect, project and even detect the sun. If I were to explain what you look like you would have to look like a star, a son of the sun. I would gain energy simply from the light that You shine on me I would need you in order to complete my photosynthesis. I await Your revelation but once again from the genesis I will wait for You and I will know You, because when you speak I will be reminded of Solomon’s wisdom. Your ability to lead will remind me of Moses. Your faith will remind me of Abraham. Your confidence in God’s word will remind me of Daniel. Your inspiration will remind me of Paul. Your heart for God will remind me of David. Your attention to detail will remind me of Noah. Your integrity will remind me of Joseph and your ability to abandon your own will will remind me of the disciples, but your ability to love selflessly and unconditionally will remind me of Christ. But I won’t need to identify you by any special matthews or any special marks, ‘cos his word will be tatted all over your heart. And you will know me and you will find me where the boldness of Esther meets the warm closeness of Ruth, with the hospitality of Lydia as align with the submission of Mary, which is engulfed in the tears of a praying Hannah. I will be the one drenched in Proverbs 31 waiting for you. But to my Father, my Father who has known me before I was birthed into this earth only if You should see fit. I desire Your will above mine so even if You call me to a life of singleness, my heart is content with You: the one who has sent. You are the greatest love story ever told, the greatest love ever known. You are forever my judge and I’m forever your witness and I pray that I’m always found on a mission about my Father’s business. I will always be Yours and I will always wait for You, Lord. More than the watchmen wait for the morning more than the watchmen wait for the morning, I will wait.

This week's persecuted church: Bangladesh

A Christian has been sentenced to one year in prison for "creating chaos" for selling and distributing Christian books and other literature near a major Muslim gathering north of this capital city. Supposedly he did not get the chance for self-defense in court. In 2009, Muslim pilgrims beat and threatened to kill another Bible student as he distriubted Christian literature. Bangladesh is the world's third-largest Muslim-majority nation, with Muslims making up 89 perpect of its population of 164.4 million. Christians are less than 1 percent of the total, and Hindus 9 percent.

Tough Tuesday

I've had a fairly emotional day today. From talking about family plans and direction at lunch to finding out about a dejected church member to reduced working hours to this, even just listening to Ravi Zacharias describing numerous stories of poverty and struggle in India, stories of people drinking milk out of the garbage or babies who survived from being thrown into a dumpster by a mother with AIDS, my heart has carried a lot of burden for one day. But then I come home and read about THIS. Sure this adds more emotion to my day, but it also teaches me to shut up for a few minutes.

I don't think I've ever used the word "thankless" before. But right now, I think I'm worthy of using it on myself. Man, what a day.

How was your weekend?

My friends had been telling me about this 왕돈까스 place for a while now. I didn't believe how big it was until I actually got my plate. They weren't kidding. Only 6,000won too!
Here is our new EM mascot aka 영진. Or was it 영지? Well, her English name is Joan as in Joan of Arc. Our new pastor's daughter. Amazingly cute.
These guys really wanted to play arcades today, but I think watching them was more fun than playing.

Not bad.
