Freakin' Family Guy. Koreans would never think of this kinda stuff.
The number one question that I get asked is: Do you have a girlfriend? Every church member, hakwon class, and family member has asked me this question. Some people ask me multiple times or ask in variations. For example, 8 year old Andy asked, "Why don't you have a girlfriend?" 9 year old Jane asked, "Do you have any children?" After I tell them NO for the nth time, the next thing they say is: Well, we're going to have to find you someone. Since I get tired of telling them no, I just tell them that I have a wife or girlfriend who's been hiding from me for a long time cause we're playing a very difficult game of hide and seek. I make sure to tell them that if they find her, they must report her to me immediately.
I also have this ongoing joke with my students that I'm really 42 years old who looks really really young for his age. Some get really upset about how adamant I am about my age. The younger ones who tend to be more gullible experience the most confusion. One of my students offered to hook me up with her aunt who'd be really young for me (27 years old). I also love pretending to not understand any Korean because they try so hard to teach me how to say Hello or Thank You while I purposely confuse the two words. Oh, if you kids only knew.
Although I was born in '84, I am totally convinced that I'm 24 years old now. Being at this age, I have plenty of thoughts about dating and marriage. I always wonder when and how I'll meet the girl of my dreams. I must confess that I've even browsed around Koreancupid.com and looked up a few profiles for fun. It's exciting to see potential matches, but not having the courage or humility to go through one of those. My brother has a deep fear that I'll come back with a Korean girl whom he promises to hate. Too bad all the pretty ones tend to be ungodly.
Where is my Serena?
