Cambodia

was amazing.

This is a picture of Mark and his medical team that works with many rescued victims of human trafficking. The woman in orange is one of the few second generation Khmer Christians in the country. Her parents lived through and survived the Khmer Rouge out of 210 Christians. Incredible.

There are too many crazy stories that were told, but there is one about a former prostitute that cleaned up her life and married a Christian guy. When Mark asked the guy if he knew everything about her past, he said that he did. But Mark asked him if he knew EVERYTHING everything. The guy said he cried for so many days that his stomach hurt after hearing everything about the girl's past. In the end, he had to ask himself, "Why shouldn't I accept her if Jesus has accepted us?"

God is doing some amazing things in that country.

Phases?

I got into this strange phase of listening to Khalid. He's pretty popular with my students, which is why I thought the generational gap would keep me from appreciating this Mumble R&B. I can't believe he's only 21, and I'm embarrassed to admit that I like his Free Spirit album. I hope this is just a phase.
In the past month, I met various people who genuinely enjoy hiking. I've always thought of it as something nice to do but never thought of turning it into a hobby. But I happened to be nearby an outlet mall over the weekend and decided to finally invest in a pair of hiking shoes. And I actually went for a hike today. By myself. And I loved it! I hope this is NOT just a phase.

Golden Buzzer

I got really into America's Got Talent last summer when I would take YouTube breaks in between my online courses. Like any reality talent show, I think the appeal of this show comes from seeing the reaction of the judges and subsequently the reaction of the performer. We usually see the best reactions from the Golden Buzzer moments because they represent total acceptance and acknowledgement from a judge. Isn't that what we are all constantly striving for in life? Acceptance.

We sang this song at church recently and it reminded me once again that I've already been fully accepted by the ultimate judge. Even if I experience painful fleeting moments of rejection in life, I should remember that I've already gotten my Golden Buzzer.

On that note, the Golden State Warriors were rejected another championship last night and my dad texted me ㅜㅜㅜ, but I like how Steph ended his post-game interview: "It's kind of hard to talk about it cause it's a tough way to go out. It's tough to lose in the finals, but story's not over yet."

I should get back to my online course.

with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I remember when a former student of mine argued that Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium album was clearly better than Foo Fighters' One by One album. I thought he was absurd even though I had never even heard the Chili Peppers' album all the way through. It's incredible just how many good songs are on this 2-CD album!

I'm still buying CDs and have absolutely no regrets! I also highly recommend De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising. An absolute hip hop masterpiece.

Music and Videos

I don't know too many people who still buy cds, but it is one of the things I still enjoy collecting. I think one reason for my purchases is that my taste in music can change, which means I can appreciate songs I didn't care for before. For instance, I bought The Killers' Hot Fuss back in college only because I liked Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me. I completely ignored all of the other songs all these years...until this year. It turns out that this debut album had all these hidden gems I was never aware of.

In more recent days...I think watching these videos will suffice my case.

Is that the best intro or what? Once Upon a Time in the West harmonica for those of you who didn't notice the significance. Even their music video is lots of fun!

I'm glad I bought this album too! And would you believe it? The Killers AND Muse will be playing at The Forum next month! But since we're on the topic of music and videos, I also wanted to share that I just got an email from a former student of mine in Korea who was deleting her old emails and stumbled upon an email I had written her 10 years ago. Turns out she ended up becoming the singer she said she'd always become.

I can't tell which one she is in this video, but Naver confirms her identity. I doubt I'll be buying their album though.

Roached

I've been living in Koreatown for nearly four years and have gotten used to many of its challenges. Driving and parking. Loud drunk people late at night (and early in the morning). Thrown out furniture. Landmines of dog crap. LAPD and LAFD. The smell of weed. The music of ice cream trucks way past ice cream hours. It's all part of the Koreatown residency.

Unfortunately, the one challenge I have not been able to get used to is cockroaches. I see them ALL THE TIME. On the streets. In my school restrooms. In my classroom. Apparently, my brother found a dead one last week in my car! I can honestly tolerate all of this roach business everywhere I go, but the one place I cannot tolerate it is in my home.

We've been finding them dead and alive in our bathrooms, closets, and living room. But their favorite place to greet us is the kitchen. I don't have enough fingers or toes to count how many cockroaches I have had to take care of in the past year. Turning on our kitchen light is always stressful. Pulling up the shower curtains is always stressful. There is definitely real trauma I have experienced, and pest control does not seem to have a solution.

Our annual lease is coming to an end, so my brother and I have been looking for potential places to move to. With the rent and parking being so bad throughout LA, it's really hard to find some place that will meet all of our needs at an affordable price. We even had our moments of deep discouragement and started to consider just staying another year. But one night after my brother turned on the kitchen light that revealed the biggest live roach I have ever seen, I knew we could stay here no longer.

So, as of today, I am happy to announce that in approximately two months, we will finally end our relationship with Koreatown...and hopefully with cockroaches forevermore. 벌래 shekis!

My mom told me she remembers how beautiful the weather was when I was born. It's been beautiful almost every year for as long as I can remember. Sunny sky in the 70s. Usually right around spring break, if not during.

My friends usually feel sad on their birthday as they turn a year older. For me, apart from the free drink from Starbucks and a nice meal with friends, I feel happy because it's a reminder of how good God has been to me all these years. My life is VERY good with so much to be thankful for. If only my life reflected more of that gratitude.

Indebted

I've never suffered from credit card debt before. I spent a couple of hours yesterday calculating how long it would take for me to pay off all my debt. Credit card debt, that is, not my student loans. Student loans are like a faithful companion; they will never, ever, leave me. Anyway, let's just say that I am really looking forward to 2018. I will finally have my car paid off and my salary should see a slight raise as well.

This morning, I read an article on a 42-year-old millionaire and his advice on spending and saving. My biggest takeaway from his wisdom was making a spreadsheet of your finances. I had done this when I first moved back to the states but stopped keeping up with it because my spending and earning patterns were fairly consistent. But now that I am in debt, I figured tracking my money again would help me restart my journey towards becoming a millionaire high school teacher.

I must say that the past month did not look too pretty. But I guess when you're at the bottom, you can only go up, right?

Devotionals for the Undevoted

I recently found out that Banner of Truth posts a free daily devotional from The Valley of Vision, a book of Puritan prayers and devotions. I recall my passionate days of promoting reformed theology and even giving a copy of The Valley of Vision to those who were remotely interested. The irony is that I never read the book myself except for a handful of prayers that sounded like they were reserved for the lips of holy people.

I've been going through the Psalms in my personal devotions, but my prayers have felt repetitive, dry, and pointless for a while now. Like one of my small group members once shared, it often looks something like "God, you know, you know, you know, thank you, thank you, thank you. Amen." I suppose that is one of the many reasons why the author of The Valley of Vision researched and wrote those amazing prayers. The Holy Spirit groans our heart, but it is nice to also have guided carefully chosen words that we can ponder upon and express to the Father who listens.

If you are struggling with conversing with God, I would recommend these accessible Puritan prayers as an addition, not substitution, to your prayers. They are definitely for UNholy people. Like me.

Math is Funny

I usually give an extra credit opportunity for my students whenever they take a quiz. All they have to do is answer a reflection question on something they learned, something that was helpful, or something that could improve their learning.

This week, my reflection question was: This year, do you think you have improved, stayed the same, or become worse as a math student? Why?

I get all kinds of answers ranging from not understanding anything to Mr. Chung is the best, but one of my students wrote: "improved because with a happy mindset and a golden heart, anything can be accomplished."

I can't tell if the student is being sincere or not, but either way I had a good laugh. I recently heard from another teacher that she had students who would write things like JESUS IS THE ANSWER for her math problems. Haha. Kids are funny.

Rookie Mistake

Ms. Brie is a first year English teacher at my school. Since we're both rookies to LAUSD, I make a slightly more intentional effort to greet her or ask how she is doing whenever we pass each other in the hallways. But every time we speak, she doesn't quite show the same smile she gives to everyone else. I start wondering if my subtle efforts to be nice and relational are coming off the wrong way.

Then one day during winter break, I'm browsing through IMDB and look through the celebrity birthdays. The actress, Alison Brie, was born 34 years ago on December 29th. To my horror I realize that I somehow mixed up Alison Brie with the English teacher whose name is also Alison. In other words, there IS NO "Ms. Brie" at my school and I've been calling this English teacher the wrong name for an entire semester. In fact, now I'm not even sure that her name is Alison!

I wonder how many times she's told her story of how the new math teacher keeps calling her "Ms. Brie" for some reason. Why didn't you ever correct me, Ms. Brie???

So Far

I just read an article from Business Insider entitled Teachers share 19 things they'd love to tell their students but can't. Here is one part of the article that really resonated with me:

"You may not realize how important it is to do well in school. You grew up in a tiny apartment in a horrible neighborhood, your parents aren't educated, you're working 18 hour-days, and your neighbors are selling drugs — and maybe you think this is all normal, but it's not, and you have a chance to get out of this."

I finished my first month of teaching and I've really enjoyed it...so far. I always knew that teachers had to have the gift of flexibility, but adapting to SO many unexpected changes very suddenly has really opened my eyes to the challenges of working in a public school. Ranging from handling 40 enrolled student classes to getting creative with solely Spanish-speaking classes, I've learned that a teacher education program can only prepare you for so much.

But like I said, I really enjoy teaching. At my school. With the students that I have. Alongside my partnering staff members. So far.

Thankful > Excited

I have about two free weeks left before the teaching career really begins. It has not been easy trying to imagine what my classes will be like and how I should prepare lessons or activities for them. It doesn't help knowing the universal fact that the first year of teaching is the most difficult year.

I tried to get myself inspired by watching movies like Freedom Writers and Stand and Deliver, but all they seem to do is fast-forward to all of the successful outcomes of their struggles. Jaime Escalante apparently didn't even have any struggles. Orale! here and the students all do their homework, and Orale! there and the students are finding derivatives right after Algebra I.

Well, at least I got a job in the district that's really close to where I live. I guess I'm more thankful than excited for my first year of teaching. Buy bigger pizzas everyone!

My Genesis and Exodus

On May 6, Phil got his CSET results. Did not pass. He was devastated.

On May 11, Phil sent out his resume and cover letter to his first school.

On May 12, Phil retook the CSET for the third time. The test was nearly identical to the first one he had taken in November. He guessed on 9 out of 30 questions.

During this time, Phil was reading through Genesis and observed that Joseph went through numerous misfortunes. The misfortunes were often accompanied by the words, But God was with Joseph, which also meant But God was with Phil.

On May 13, Phil applied to two more schools.

On May 19, Phil met with one of the principals on his campus to drop off his resume, cover letter, and recommendation letter. The principal said he would let him know when he could interview for the following week.

On May 20, the principal never responded.

On May 24, Phil wrote to the principal to confirm a potential interview. The principal never responded. Phil applied to two schools.

On May 25, Phil met with his own principal after a fire drill to drop off his resume, cover, letter, and recommendation letters. The principal said he could not interview anyone that was not cleared for hire yet. Phil interviewed at a middle school in South LA and received a job offer. He asked for two days to think about it. Phil applied to another school.

On May 26, Phil discussed the job opportunity with colleagues and family members but still had no clear answer.

On May 27, Phil declined the offer and took the risk of missing out on a district job. Phil applied to another school.

On May 28, Phil applied to Los Angeles High School. Yes, that's the name of the school.

On May 31, the vice principal asked to come in for an interview.

On June 1, Phil interviewed at LA High and was told he would be contacted by the next day. On the drive home, the vice principal called to offer the job. Phil accepted the job and informed the vice principal that he would inform her of his CSET results that would come out in two days. He looked up test dates for the next opportunity to retake the test as was his custom, but there were none that would allow time for the district to process him in time for the upcoming school year. The applications, emails for references, and interviews would mean nothing with another Did not pass.

During this time, Phil was reading through Exodus and observed that God repeatedly used sentences that started with I will... God told Moses
I will bring you out
I will deliver
I will also redeem you
I will take you for My people
I will be your God
I will bring you to the land
That last sentence stuck with Phil during these anxious times. His personal version was I will bring you to the school.

By the way, the first principal Phil had met with emailed asking to come in for an interview that day or the next if Phil had not accepted a position yet. Phil chose not to respond.

On June 3, Phil got his CSET results.
Phil shared his gospel with family and friends and opened up a wine bottle that was reserved for a special occasion. Here is the picture my supportive classmates sent me of them celebrating my victory.

I looked back on my journey with the third CSET and imagined what could have happened if I had passed either on the first or second try. I am certain I would have approached my school applications very differently. Because I was so busy and focused on studying for the test, I did not apply to two specific schools early on, which resulted in their positions getting filled. The first school was a pilot school. The other was a REED school. Both types of schools are very demanding and not exactly favorable for first year teachers like myself. I am confident I would have accepted their offers.

But because I had applied to schools (and even took the chance of turning one down) after all of my classmates had secured jobs, I discovered the opening for LA High, Southern California's oldest public school, just 10 minutes away from where I live with only Algebra I to focus on, which happens to be what I taught this year.

When Phil was all alone studying for those tests multiple times, God was with him because God was bringing Phil to his school. And Phil thanked the Lord.

Textbook Bridge is Falling Down

On Friday, my classmates and I had an engineering task of making a bridge out of paper, tape, straw, and paper clips. The objective was to make a bridge that could hold as many textbooks as possible. My team came up with this design that was able to sustain a whopping 18 textbooks before collapsing. Who knew paper and straw could be so dense and resilient!

I like this picture because it symbolizes to me the workload and pressure that everyone in my cohort carries every day. Spring quarter is a tricky quarter since we're trying to finish the school year, academic and student teaching, while trying to find our first teaching job for next year. In fact, 6 out of 16 students were away for interviews on that Friday. Two have already accepted offers. I have yet to get started.

I think I'm burnt out. I'm sick of "holding up so many textbooks" in the midst of so much uncertainty. I still have a bunch of work to do and I don't even know if I've passed my CSET, if LAUSD will inform us about the rumored hiring freeze, or if I'll get hired at a decent school. As I told my small group last week, uncertainty is uncomfortable, and I feel like I've been uncomfortable for quite some time now.

But discomfort keeps you close to God. You're pushed to constantly ask for help. And so you pray. And we know that He listens.

Even if the bridge collapses, it'll all work out somehow.

Spring Break Broken

Today is Good Friday, but it happens to be a good Friday for two reasons. The first being that this is the day the Church commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. The second being that I make my second attempt at passing the third CSET to be fully qualified to teach all levels of secondary math.

Unfortunately, the second reason is playing a bigger role in my mind because I have dreadfully studied calculus for the past month during one of the most academically challenging quarters of my life. I actually thought it would be impossible to study so much with so little time that I threw away all of my previous practice test questions and returned the textbooks that got lost somewhere. So I took an oath to never see that horrible CSET again.

Then representatives from LAUSD dropped us a visit and informed us that all three CSETs had to be passed in order to be eligible for hire. So after that bomb dropped, I had to improvise. I finished EDTPA a month early just so that I can have more time to study. I canceled road trip plans just so that I can have more time to study. I scheduled this test all the way back to Friday this week just so that I can have more time to study. In fact, three of my classmates had to postpone their test because they felt like they did not have sufficient time to study. In other words, I worked really hard and sacrificed a whole lot just so that I can have more time to study.

Finishing this test means that my spring break officially starts today at 5 PM, a week later than the rest of my cohort colleagues. One of my classmates texted us after finishing his EDTPA saying that he was going to down 12 Smirnoff Ices to start off his break. I don't think I would go that far, but I can finally watch my Warrior games and drink my beer with no guilt for the next three and a half days. I may not get to see Antelope Canyon this spring, but I can confidently say that I did my best given my situation.

I just hope my best is good enough so that I don't have to break another oath to never see this horrible CSET again.

Let's GO~

My brother and I started playing Go/Stop this week. At one point, he owed me $22. Now he only owes me $2.40. I forgot how fast time (and money) can fly by when you're playing this crazy Korean game. It reminds me of those late nights in Seoul when I used to play with my dad after having a few drinks over dinner. It's amazing how much money I lost to him but also how fun it was. I wonder why we stopped playing.

As my brother and I are playing these days, there are more than a few times where I make a very careless decision and end up losing the game. I have the perfect opportunity to put down the right card or call it quits when I have the chance, but one negligent move tumbles me down to multiple consecutive losses. It's one thing to lose when the situation is out of your control, and it's another thing to throw away a win because you didn't realize what you were holding in your hand. I guess that's what I'm afraid of happening in real life.

I hate the idea of wasting time or being behind because of poor decisions that I made. But now that I have a spouse as a life partner, I feel more burdened to be more careful with what we choose to do in the present so that our future will not hold any regrets. I don't want either of us to say that we should have done A, B, and C or kick ourselves for having done D, E, and F. I don't want us to have consecutive multiple losses because of my unwise choices.

But we're in this real-life Go/Stop game, and I have to realize that if my $22 turns into $2.40, it can also just as easily go from $2.40 to $22. The Psalm I read this morning reminded me that God tells us "know that I am God." That means I have to remind myself over and over again that He controls the deck despite my imperfect strategies. I can't lose!

Let Me Serenade the Streets of L.A.

There are two things I experience every single day. Sirens. Marijuana. I hear the first. Smell the second. I wonder if the two are related to one another.

Living in Los Angeles has been interesting. Contrary to popular belief, New York does not have the worst traffic in the country; L.A. does. In fact, San Francisco and San Jose turn out to have heavier traffic congestion than the City of the Big Apple. I always knew I should "never be on the 405 at 4:05," but I now have a deeper respect (and pity) for those who have 1+ hour commutes to work every day. That can add up to a lot of unhappy hours.

I thought living in an urban area would mean having more parks with basketball courts where I can play with strangers and forget about my stress of the day. Residing in the city actually entails risking your safety in scary parks with drug dealers and homeless people or overcrowded courts with high school kids who can ball me up. I don't see my current basketball shoes getting worn out any time soon.

Koreatown is supposed to be dirty and polluted with immigrants and idiot gangsters who aren't really gangsters. I was expecting people always being drunk and acting like fools in front of food trucks. It turns out that people are a lot more civilized and the area is much cleaner than many of the parts I've seen in Seoul. Living in this weird ethnic enclave actually ain't so bad. It isn't even that weird anymore. I can totally see why my brother chose this area for our new home.

L.A. is not what I had expected, but it's good. L.A. is now my new home. Even with the relentless firetrucks and potheads.

I spent this past week hanging out a lot with my old co-worker, Brian. In our first meeting, we had coffee and went to go watch Fury. I really enjoyed this war movie and, as always, looked up all the trivia afterward on IMDB. Apparently, Shia Lebeouf became a Christian while filming Fury and had a very inspirational way of sharing about his experience. This is what it says on IMDB:

It has been reported that Shia LaBoeuf became a Christian while filming 'Fury'. LaBoeuf's actual words were, "I found God during Fury. I became a Christian man, and not in a f___ing bulls__t way - in a very real way. I could have just said the prayers that were on the page, but [...] it's a full-blown exchange of heart, a surrender of control." He commented that talking with Brad Pitt, who grew up in a conservative Christian home but rejected Christianity, and with David Ayers, the Christian director of 'Fury', helped crystallise his thinking.

Upon reading that quote, I looked up some of his recent interviews and loved the way he recounted his arrest story:

The second time I met up with Brian, we went to the DMZ and even got to enter JSA since we're American citizens. It was the one foreigner touristy thing I never got to do. DMZ was so-so, but JSA was pretty cool.
I'm actually technically standing in North Korea in that picture. I had one last meeting with him and a bunch of his friends for my last Thanksgiving in Korea with spicy pork ribs.

After finishing up my GRE and finally sending out my grad school apps, I've been having some serious senioritis as my departure for L.A. has been approaching rather quickly. My mind is on overload as I'm packing up, meeting a million people, and still trying to squeeze in some math while I have some time. I don't know how I'm going to pass my CSETs.

That new Star Wars teaser looks crazy.

Homeland from the Motherland

My brother's been telling me for years to jump on Homeland, but I continually refused after being convinced that it would just be another show like 24. But he somehow got my dad to start watching it. My dad somehow got my mom to start. And since my mom never watches anything and seeing how much she enjoyed it, I finally caved and used it as my break from GRE studies, which I will finally be taking tomorrow (bring it on!).

As the show centers on a POW who's been gone for the past eight years, I couldn't help but imagine that the show foreshadows a bit of what I might go through real soon. I, too, have been gone for eight years being tortured and brainwashed in the dungeons of Seoul. Just kidding. There was no brainwashing involved, but I suspect some of my American family and friends might believe that I've "turned." I'm prepared for all your FOB taunts and mockeries.

I just finished the first season, and I think the show's alright but not great. However, I thought this short parody was great.

To Live and Die in L.A.

I've been studying at Starbucks several times a week for the past couple of months. They've been playing Christmas music since late October, so I've gotten a head start on the holiday spirit this year. Ironically, Starbucks in Korea is the only place that feels Christmasy in the country. I'm really looking forward to spending it elsewhere soon. But before that happens, I need a place to live first.

My brother has been house hunting for a while now, constantly asking me about living conditions, budgets, and all sorts of preferences and priorities we might have. I've never actually lived in the city of Los Angeles before, so it's been really tricky trying to give him an idea of what we would like. Some place cheap, perhaps? Not Compton or Inglewood. Not too much traffic. You can see why we're having trouble figuring out if such a place even exists in L.A.

But that is why we've adjusted our focus from West L.A. to Koreatown. Just when I thought I was finally escaping the world of Koreans, I find myself going to its distant cousin. However, I am optimistic about a couple of prospects that I've seen online so far. Besides, this area might even absorb some of the inevitable culture shock we're bound to face. It's also comforting to see my brother's positive reaction with our sights at K-town. It'll be so cool to have a pool again, too!

I never really liked this song until today.

12 모기s

From midnight to noon, I spent six hours of the night and six hours of the morning catching 12 mosquitoes;at least, I think it was 12. After around 4am, I lost count. After another sleepless night of cyclic buzzing, waking up, smashing, wiping, and going back to sleep, I woke up to find two more vampires hanging on the ceiling, waiting their turn to join the pile of tissue that was collected for all the corpses and stolen blood from the night. I thought rainy days were supposed to reduce the number of mosquitoes, not multiply it! I truly regret not getting that mosquito tennis racket thing.

Nate the Great

I've been gearing up for the NBA by watching some preseason highlights and was surprised to hear that Nate Robinson had recently returned from ACL surgery. I have a bigger heart for basketball players who go through any major injury especially after spraining my ankle during a game yesterday.

Sprains can heal relatively fast, but tears and fractures are a different monster. All these injuries just remind me that we're all getting old and youth doesn't last forever. Remember when Nate Robinson used to be able to fly?

Man, I never knew Iguodala was able to jump and dunk like that.

I may have to retire from my basketball career...in Korea.

Bye, Bye, Bye

Today is my last day at Whimoon Middle School. It would have been awesome if they had switched Monday's Sports Day with today's Speech Contest, but whattaya gonna do? I'm just glad that my last day happened to be on a Friday instead of a dreaded and awkward Monday.

I've been saying goodbyes to my classes one surprise at a time with lots of mixed reactions from students. Indifference. Anger. Sadness. Joy? Yesterday, I had one student come up to hug me with a bunch of students lining up behind him to shake my hand. I think the box of candy I was holding might have had something to do with that though. But I was really moved when an older student came by my room after school to apologize for his bad attitude and behavior for the past couple of years. A very humble gesture from a very arrogant adolescent. I never saw that coming.

As I went to my last rush hour subway this morning, I reminisced on many of the good times I had at this school. I definitely won't miss certain classes or the writing assessments I had to grade every semester, and I most certainly will not miss my subway adversaries like Mr. Sneeze and Mr. Phlegm. But like a nightmare come true, guess who just happened to want to say goodbye on my last commute to work?

Freaking nasty Mr. Phlegm. :(

The Beauty of Mount Math

"She said there was comfort to be found in the permanence of mathematical truths, in the lack of arbitrariness and the absence of ambiguity. In knowing that the answers may be elusive, but they could be found. They were there, waiting, chalk scribbles away."
-Pari, And the Mountains Echoed

I just finished going through my entire geometry book that took me exactly one whole month after borrowing it from a former student of mine. I've always had trouble explaining to people why I like math even though I'm not good at it. But I think Pari has come the closest to describing something I feel when I look at the uniformity of all the numbers and formulas that are universally true. It all just "makes sense" even when we don't understand every proof or theorem. But it's especially beautiful when we do understand the concepts presented to us. I hope I can become a great math teacher some day.

Please Don't Sneeze (On Me)

I decided to wake up 30 minutes later than usual starting from this week since I don't have any work to get done at school. I was surprised to see that I was still able to get on the subway at a decent time, but that coincided in meeting Mr. Sneeze. Getting sneezed on by Mr. Sneeze, rather. Twice. The second time, I was able to smell his breath through the sneeze. Morning rush hour sucks. Mr. Sneeze sucks.

I was surprised to see so many people in red outside of COEX to watch Korea's first World Cup game at 7 in the morning. At one point, the giant screen turned off and made a lot of Koreans angry, but everyone just took out their cell phones to continue watching the game. I can't believe we didn't lose.

Baskets & Goals

I've never cheered for the Spurs in my life, but I grew so much respect for them this season watching them play very unselfish basketball with the NBA's toughest coach. I'm happy for Parker and Timmy but still don't care for Manu.

So with the playoffs of my favorite sport coming to an end, I have the World Cup games to look forward to. Unfortunately, I have very little excitement or hope for Korea's team this year, but maybe such low expectations will protect me from disappointment, especially if I'm waking up at four or five in the morning.

Four Chords

I often have interesting conversations with the Chinese (language) teachers at my school. We have many similar yet different experiences with teaching our respective foreign languages to our students. For example, we can agree on many of the classes that are very active and hardworking while others are inactive and just make our work hard. But one major difference I learned today was that the Chinese teachers tried to incorporate music into their lessons, as in having the students sing along to some songs. I'd probably do more harm than good if I had to sing in front of my students, so I'll leave that teaching method to our non-English teachers. Godspeed, Mr. Kim.

No Pain, No Gain

As I'm coming to an end with my school contract, this is the last time I will have to grade all the school writing tests of the semester. The two topics for this semester that I've seen so far have been:
-writing a letter of apology or gratitude to parents
-writing a letter of apology or gratitude to family members/friends.

It's amazing to see how many students shout, lie, steal, and forget when it comes to their loved ones. Foreign language students are also brutally honest with their faults, so I read some pretty sincere stuff around this time of the year. And of course, I also get a handful of letters that say some of the most ridiculous things, intended or not. This year, one of the students wrote a letter of thanks to his grandfather saying:

I hope you are getting better from your cancer. Grandpa! No pain, No gain.

Probably not the best time to use American mottos to a dying relative, but you can see the encouragement behind the words. It's also funny seeing futile attempts at kissing my butt with finishing words of "I love you, Mr. Jung" written inside a lopsided heart with happy faces. I wonder if this is a tiny experience of what God sees and hears with our prayers. I probably crack Him up all the time.

Despicable YOU

Taking the same subway train at the same subway door at the same time every morning introduces you to a lot of the same people with the same routines. In fact, two out of five weekdays I can even predict who will be sitting at the very last seat ready to get off two stations later. I usually aim to stand in front of that person. These are some of the "good" people in the subway.

Unfortunately, there are a handful of "bad" subway commuters that I see almost every week. One of these despicable people is called Mr. Phlegm. Approximately every 45 seconds, Mr. Phlegm makes the sound of gathering phlegm from his nasal cavity at a really loud volume for his commuting audience to hear. It gives me pure disgust. Not the greatest way to start your day.

I hadn't seen (or rather, heard) Mr. Phlegm in a while until this morning, but the main inspiration for this blogpost comes from Mr. Sneeze. I don't know if he's just sick for months on end or his allergies have kicked in, but this guy will not stop sneezing...with his mouth uncovered. He's awful generous with his germs to whoever happens to be sitting in front of him. The first time it happened to me, Mr. Sneeze even shared some of his spit with my bare arms. I gave him a look. He responded with another sneeze.

So, with "bad" subway people come "bad" subway days. Today was a "bad" subway day. I had Mr. Phlegm and Mr. Sneeze stand next to each other. In front of me. I'll let your imagination tell the rest.

Clippers Advance

There's nothing worse than losing when you've had the lead for the majority of the game. The Warriors are infamous for their turnovers and careless defense, especially from their superstar shooter, Stephen Curry. Klay is like a light switch. He's either on or off. Hot or cold. Draymond Green commits stupid fouls and takes way too many three pointers with his low shooting percentage. It doesn't help that their big men are prone to injury. Ultimately, they're a very unreliable team.

But that's also why I love the Warriors. They're very human. They remind me of a group of people who are so imperfect and inconsistent yet still have the ability to work together and accomplish some amazing things. Kind of like the church. Today's loss was heartbreaking, but I look forward to cheering for them again next year but this time with my brother. I'll finally have someone to scream and cry with. Till then, let's go Portland!

Mr. Lee chews. He spits. He scores! I can't believe I'm getting (someone else's) food on me every single week now. I wish the school gave technical fouls and ejections for such flagrant behavior.

The NBA playoffs are so fun this year. Already there are so many games that have gone into OT with some breathtaking moments. I am fortunate to work at a place where I can watch many of these exciting events in my classroom and even cheer in solitude when class is not in session. Where is God on Good Friday?

Korea has been overwhelmed with sadness, anger, confusion, and frustration over the recent tragedy of the ferry boat accident. Many are outraged by the guilt-ridden captain of the ship, the unreliable press, and the incompetent politicians along with the president. The reality of the situation hadn't hit me until I finally saw a video of the ship completely submerged under water. The man sitting next to me on the subway was also watching the same news channel on his phone and sniffling and fighting back tears. I've never mourned with Korea like this before. Where is God in all of this?

Less than a week ago on Palm Sunday, our church sang and gave a lot of attention to the word, 'Hosanna,' which means 'save us.' That word carried a lot more meaning after hearing about the Korean high school students crying out their own hosannas as their ship was sinking into the water. Desperate for rescue and safety, the country has joined in their cry for any form of help they can get. God, where are you in all of this as we're crying out for salvation?

Tonight, our Good Friday service had a record attendance of 11 people. After a time of scripture, hymns, and prayers, we were asked to leave in silence with a sense of solemnity just as the disciples had after Jesus was arrested. Funny how our number of 11 happened to match the number of disciples who had scattered and abandoned him that night. But before we separated and went our own ways, we read through the psalm that Jesus quoted while hanging on the cross: Psalm 22 that starts with "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

We've all prayed that same prayer before. God seems to be M.I.A. Unaware. Unresponsive. Uncaring. Silent. Distant. I will repeat the same question a third time: God, where are you? But the psalm Jesus quotes does not end with that question; it is merely the introduction to a cry that ends in praise. What appears to be a psalm of despair actually turns out to be a psalm of hope. He knew pain and suffering. He knows our pain and suffering. Our God is deeply and heavily involved with every situation and will not let death have its final say. As it says towards the end of Psalm 22, "All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive."

The Lord hears. The Lord knows. The Lord died. The Lord resurrected. The Lord is working. Where is God in all of this? He is right here deeply and heavily involved with us.

I had put off watching the second Hobbit movie due to lack of finances and interest, but I finally mustered enough will to reserve a ticket and make time before it disappeared from theaters. Although I was limited to a front row seat at a matinee hour, I was able to get a generous discount and appreciate a lowly anticipated movie with an AWESOME dragon.

That is one mean dragon. It's almost disappointing to know that he'll die in the next movie, which I had no idea about. I was sitting through the movie wondering how in the world Peter Jackson was going to wrap up this whole story in the next 30...20...10 minutes! And so when the movie ended with those awesome lines, "I am fire. I am...DEATH," I was half-disappointed that I'd have to watch another Hobbit movie but also satisfied with how this sequel ended. But yeah, I am totally a fan of Smaug now.

"I wanna be a billionaire..."

Last night, I had a dream that I was in a Simpsons episode that parodied Korean culture in America. I somehow ended up living in that episode and went to an ATM to deposit a paycheck that was just over $200 so that I can buy some lottery tickets for this current Mega Millions jackpot. My paycheck ended up jamming the machine, and I had to leave the machine with many frustrated people who were in line behind me. I went to Hana Bank to tell them about my problem, but their wonderful solution was to wait. The end.

There is a Korean superstition about seeing a dragon, pig, dung, or gold (and I think even money) in a dream that could mean good luck. With the current jackpot nearing a billion, I wonder if I should get a lottery ticket.

Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.

Growing up with a healthy obsession with dinosaurs, Jurassic Park probably had to be one of the best movies of my childhood. In fact, it was the only time I can clearly remember my whole family going out to watch a movie together. I loved how the dinosaurs seemed so real throughout the entire movie. So real that my brother cried when the T-Rex made its first memorable appearance. It was the perfect movie.

In fact, it was so perfect that I even asked my dad to buy me the original soundtrack. So perfect that I begged my mom to buy me the original Michael Crichton novel along with the The Lost World hardcover edition even though I was only in 5th grade and couldn't understand 80% of it. So perfect that we bought it on video from Costco and my brother and I watched it at least 30 times. "Shoot huh! Shoot huh!" It was seriously da bomb.

Unfortunately, the sequels were nowhere nearly as good although I was always excited to watch them and still look forward to the fourth one supposedly coming out in 2015. I never rewatched any of the sequels until last night when I had nothing better to do and decided to relive one of my childhood memories. I never knew that Vince Vaughn was in the Lost World! He's not so money with dinosaurs.

Anyway, I have to watch the third one now even though it got the worst ratings out of the three on IMDB. It seems as if there will never ever be a great dinosaur movie again like Jurassic Park.

방학식

Today is the last day of the first semester, which means I'm just hours away from starting my vacation. I got my second semester material all ready, so I was planning on just vegging in front of the computer without a worry...until a student's father came into the office with his son's report card. The student had gotten A's in every single subject except for English with an 89.4% B, and my writing assessment grade was responsible for that. So, naturally, the father wanted to speak with me, the Native English teacher who isn't supposed to speak Korean, let alone to students' parents.

I had pretty much damaged the student's chances of getting into a foreign language high school, so he was wondering if I could be 'understanding enough' to change the grade. He's doing all of this AFTER the test correction period and AFTER the final report card grades have been sent out. So basically, the father was in no position to ask for such a change, to me, on the last day of the semester. But my heart goes out to him anyway even though I wouldn't have been able to change anything even if I had decided to.

I'll never forget the worst psychology class I ever took in college called Research Methods. The class was insanely boring and the professor was unusually strict. He made it clear on the first day of class that anything under a 90.0% would be a B. Even an 89.99% would be a B. Straight up. And of course, I had fallen victim to that hypothetical situation with an 89.6%, but I knew better than to ask for a higher grade. The rules were rules, and the professor was an a-hole for making those rules. So yeah, I feel for that student and his father, but he can't always have daddy talk to the big bad teacher for him.

I wonder how many students have written about me in their blogs.

The vice-principal has officially dismissed us! Vacation starts NOW.

To This Day

I used to hate being called 'Stupid.' Even if it was just a joke, I used to hate it. I think the only way I stopped letting it get to me was when I accepted that I was and could be stupid and that it was okay. I guess there are a bunch of other words that have replaced 'stupid,' but I'm learning to accept those too and overcome them one by one. I think we can only accept our flaws when we know that we are still accepted. And that's really liberating.

The Green Line

I take Subway Line 2 aka 2호선 aka 지옥선 (the Hell Line) practically every single day every single week. It's one of the busiest and crowded subway lines in Seoul due to its circular route, so it can get pretty nasty during rush hour. As a result, I try to leave 10 minutes earlier than I normally have to just so that I can beat the bum rush. I've been able to time it well enough to get a seat every morning for the past two months or so, but my streak broke today when a lady strategically placed her body just a couple of inches closer to my unmarked territory to unofficially qualify for the seat that opened up just four stops after I had gotten on. If I don't get a seat by Guro Digital Complex, I won't be sitting for a while.

Sitting during rush hour is so important. It's the difference between sitting first class and getting tossed around with the cargo. You can read, pray, and sleep without having to stand, shove, sweat, and step on shoes. You appreciate it so much more during the summer months and even more on the rainy days. That's why you gotta be extra quick on your toes whenever you're coming up on a transfer station. Cause once a seat opens up on that train, everyone's antennae go up and one lucky lottery winner cashes in the prize right away. You just have to pray that no grandma walks in with heavy groceries and a cane. But for the most part, the elderly know better than to take the Hell Line at the most hellish hours.

You build a lot of character on that Green Line.

War and Peace and Neutrality

Tonight, the English teachers were supposed to meet for a friendly dinner now that the final exams are over and the semester has nearly come to an end. Unfortunately, the ongoing conflict between a few of the teachers prevented more than half of the teachers from coming out. They've had a number of meetings to find some resolution, but in the process more feelings were hurt and past scars were reopened. One teacher even took a one month leave to restore her physical health that suffered from her poor mental and emotional health. There have been a number of individuals who have tried jumping into this burning building only to come running out with burn marks. It's a very messy and childish situation.

I'm in a very interesting position being the foreign teacher who has the eyes and ears that no other teacher has. Since I teach with each of the English teachers every week, I guess you can say that I have a slightly wider perspective on the situation. But like Switzerland, I don't get involved in others' wars, and I do everything to remain neutral and see how everything unravels. If you were to ask for my two cents though, I would say that at least one person needs to swallow their pride and work towards some form of apology. Truth-telling has been done, but now there has to be room for acknowledgement and forgiveness. Otherwise, our English department will remain volatile and unstable like the North and South Korea situation...with Switzerland having dinner all alone.

Happy 3rd of July, Egypt.
