Taken from the email I wrote to my brother:
Yesterday, I made a bet with one of my classes that they couldn't stay silent for 10 minutes or so. If they didn't utter a single word, I would have to buy them lunch. After I lost the bet, I was hoping that they'd just forget about the lunch and realize that it was a joke. Unfortunately, I rushed into the wrong elevator cause it had three of my students inside. They even followed me into the bank and watched me take out cash from the atm. We went to 김밥천국 (Kimbap Heaven), and I bought them lunch. Since I'm not supposed to tell them my age or show that I know Korean, I had to do my best to pretend that I didn't know any Korean. I even made them order and ask for kimchee. Well, after the last two left, I went up to go pay. As I was telling the cashier what I had ordered, the two students opened the door and repeated everything I had said in Korean. Those tricky little scoundrels!
This morning, they saw me and told everyone that I was really good at Korean. One student mentioned how our white teacher, Joseph, might still be better at ordering food than me. But then the other student said that Joseph once asked for Sullong Tang (instead of Saltang) to put into his coffee. After they saw me crack up at that, they knew that I had understood all of their Korean. I mean, how do you not laugh at that, you know? They even double checked by looking through my ipod. Just by luck, the last song I had listened to was MC Mong's "Ice Cream." They were going crazy when they saw that I listened to Korean music. That song was like the only Korean song on my freakin' playlist today, too! So those three boys feel all chummy with me now. At least they still haven't figured out my real age...I'M 42!!!
BTW, cheese ramen is wonderful!
